Neon (Ne) is a chemical element with atomic number 10. It belongs to a group of elements called noble gases. On Earth, neon is a fairly rare elements, but in the universe as a whole it's the fifth most abundant element, after hydrogen, helium, oxygen and carbon.
The most common isotope of neon is 20Ne, 10 protons and 10 neutrons.
A common and well-known everyday application of neon is fluorescent neon signs, which are bright red in color.
